Hazmat fees for reloaders

A single fee per box can add more to your order than the sale took off. Here’s how to plan around it.

Smokeless powder and primers are regulated as hazardous materials for shipping. Carriers charge retailers a hazmat surcharge on those packages, and retailers pass it on to you as a separate line at checkout. It commonly runs between $20 and $40, and it’s charged per package, not per item.

Loaded ammunition, bullets, and brass don’t trigger the hazmat fee. Only powder and primers do.

Why it matters so much

Say you order a pound of powder and a box of 1,000 primers, about $90 worth of product, and pay a $30 hazmat fee before regular shipping. That fee just added a third to the cost of the order. A competitor charging $10 more for the powder but running a no-hazmat week comes out well ahead.

Ways to keep the fee down

How Dialed Price handles it

Hazmat fees are modeled for each store and each shipment, and active promos are applied while they run. Reloading components are ranked by what the whole order costs to arrive, which is the only fair way to compare them.
